About Corgis

Thought to have originated as the Vikings brought their dogs to the British Isles before the 10th century, Corgis are big dogs in small packages. They often lose sight of how small they really are and have the biggest of hearts.

Corgis probably resulted from the mixed breeding of the Swedish Vallhund with local Welsh dogs and were selected for their ability to herd cattle. The Pembroke variety are so named for their connection to the dogs brought over by the Flemish who settled in Pembrokshire near the 12th century.

Of course, Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II of England, is among the most famous of Corgi admirers. The Queen's first Corgi (Rozavel Golden Eagle) was a gift from her father, King George VI.

Pembrokes are energetic, playful but can be very family oriented and therefore protective of their owners. They are tenacious dogs with often silly dispositions. They do insist on attention, however, and are best suited to owners who are looking to add a family member.
